Incidental Catch of Non-target Fish Species and Protected Sea Turtles

Client:  Pelagic Fisheries Program, JIMAR, University of Hawaii, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Location: Hawaii, USA
Industry: Fisheries

Project Summary:  Bycatch issues are extremely important in fisheries management and the long-term interest of sustaining fishery resources and promoting responsible fishing and responsible seafood consumption.  This project investigated the use of Catch to Bycatch Ratios (C/B = CPUE/BPUE) in a manner that allows for the direct comparison of the ecological impacts of different fisheries based on a standard unit of fishery production.

Project Outcome:  When completed an assessment of the impact of sea turtle takes and bycatch impacts on two species of sharks and two species of finfish associated with this fishery's products will be done and meaningful comparisons with other pelagic fisheries participating in the global seafood production and supply system can be made.
