Management Regime Change in the Hawaii Longline Fishery
Project Summary: This project produced a proposal for a new management regime for the Hawaii longline fishery aimed at reducing the adverse impacts on sea turtles. This document included extensive analysis of the impacts of the pelagic longline fishing on protected sea turtles. The proposed management regime was designed to achieve greater benefits in terms of protection of sea turtles through the development of effective turtle-safe longline fishing methods and practices combined with efforts to share and promote turtle conservation among the international pelagic longline fishery.

Outcome:
The
proposal formed the basis on
which a new and improved
management system was proposed
by the Western Pacific Regional
Fishery Management Council and adopted by
the National Marine Fisheries
Service, NOAA, Dept of Commerce
for the Hawaii longline fishery.
