Client:  Hawaii Longline Association (HLA)
Location: Hawaii, USA
Industry: Fisheries

Project Summary:  This project produced a proposal for a new management regime for the Hawaii longline fishery aimed at reducing the adverse impacts on sea turtles.  This document included extensive analysis of the impacts of the pelagic longline fishing on protected sea turtles. The proposed management regime was designed to achieve greater benefits in terms of protection of sea turtles through the development of effective turtle-safe longline fishing methods and practices combined with efforts to share and promote turtle conservation among the international pelagic longline fishery.

Project Outcome:  The proposal formed the basis on which a new and improved management system was proposed by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and adopted by the National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA, Dept of Commerce for the Hawaii longline fishery.
